Witness denies murder victim Marvin Henry was in Mill Hill gangs

Reportage - 11:35

A WITNESS in a murder trial admitted he rapped about guns after initially claiming “burners” were toasters.

The man has denied he and victim Marvin Henry, who was shot in the chest on the Inglis Barracks estate, in Mill Hill, on October 27, were in a gang called Stick ‘em Up Kids (SUK).

The witness, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said SUK stood for Streets Under Kings, his group were just friends and denied Mr Henry, known as Spooky, carried out two stabbings, including one allegedly on a man called Dmitry.

He was confronted with his hip-hop lyrics by defence barrister Michael Wolkind QC, who recited verses referring to Kill Hill and containing the line, “rolling with a couple man, couple of burners in our hands”.

The witness replied: “It means a toaster,” before adding: “You are bringing up something from when I was a young boy. I was like 14 or 13 years old.”

However, he then admitted the lyrics did refer to guns, but insisted there was no gang and denied involvement in drug-dealing and carrying weapons.

He said: “When I’m with my friends I haven’t seen them do no drug-dealing activities. I haven’t seen them carrying weapons round. What you think of them is up to you.

“You can have your opinion. I’m telling you how it was.”

Ithai McPhee, 21, a builder of Abbotts Road, Edgware; Rafik Hamaizia, 18, of North Hill, Highgate; Rory Faley, 21, from Finchley and Shervin Irvani, 19, from St Albans, deny murder.

The trial at the Old Bailey continues.

Festival ends in tragedy as one man is shot dead and two others injured during street party

Reportage - 18:21

one man was shot dead and two others were injured.

A man in his early 20s was fatally wounded in the shooting at St Paul's Carnival in Bristol in the early hours of this morning.

He was gunned down outside a pub in the city while a man and woman were recovering in hospital.

Fatal: A man has been shot dead and two have been injured during a city centre street festival

Police said they were called to the Coach House pub on Stapleton Road, St Pauls, at 4.10 am where they remained for several hours carrying out investigations.

A spokesman said: 'Another man and a woman are in hospital after being shot. 'Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

'More information about the suspect will be released later this morning.' Police are still looking for the offender or offenders.

One resident, called 'mandichizambire' wrote on twitter at around 2am: 'All I hear now is sirens, guessing a shooting in st pauls, ah good old st pauls carnival!'

John Kiely, a Bristol City councillor for the Easton Ward, said the shooting had come following two stabbings in the area.

'It is very concerning there appears to be an escalation in violent crime over the past few weeks,' he said.

Police have said they are still trying to establish exactly what happened and whether the incident is linked to the festival

'One person was fatally stabbed recently and another seriously injured.

'There have been concerns about knife crime, but to hear of a fatal shooting is even more worrying.

'I called for an in-depth inquiry into violent crime in the Stapleton Road area following the stabbing of a Somali national in the area last year.

'A working group has since been set up to try and address the issue as well as how to engage with young people.

'Obviously there are worries about what resources are going to be available to the police in the future, especially given the ward has some of the highest crime figures for the Avon and Somerset Constabulary area.

'I have been a councillor in the ward for around 24 years and the majority of people live in the Easton ward are very law abiding. The problems seem to come from people outside the area.'

The shooting happened at a festival in St Pauls, Bristol

Detective Superintendent Sue Scott, of Avon and Somerset Police, described the investigation into the shooting as 'an emerging picture'.

She said: 'We are speaking to family, we are speaking to witnesses.

'Actually, because of the St Pauls Carnival last night, there were a lot of people out and about - so I would ask anyone with information to come forward.'

Det Supt Scott added that the dead man was understood to be aged about 23, and the two people injured are also suspected to have been shot.

However, she was not aware of any link to the carnival, adding: 'As I understand it, that went very well and a lot of people had a great time there. This happened a long time afterwards.

'We can't rule out a connection, but at this time we don't know.'

At present, police are not linking the shooting with two stabbings, which occurred in Bristol this week.

Three people were arrested on suspicion of murder after a man in his 30s was stabbed to death in Walker Close in the early hours of Friday.

And on Monday, a man suffered leg and chest injuries when he was stabbed in a premises in Stapleton Road. Two men have since been arrested in connection with that incident.

The Carnival started on Saturday July 2 and is an all day festival the theme was 'African Caribbean Folklore'.

St Pauls is an inner suburb of Bristol and started in 1967, the initial idea was to create an event to help improve relationships between the European, African, Caribbean and Asian inhabitants of the area.

Around 80,000 people are expected to have attended the event this year.
